Background:The effect of valacyclovir on genital herpes virus (HSV) is not well established, but it appears to affect the virus in the genital tract. A recent study showed a decrease in the duration of sexual intercourse in patients with genital herpes compared to controls (P < 0.001).
Objective:We studied the effect of the drug valacyclovir on genital herpes virus in healthy volunteers.
Design:Study of patients with genital herpes infections.
Setting:Patient population of 463 subjects aged 40-70 years.
Participants:Patients with genital herpes.
Interventions:Use of valacyclovir and the drug valaciclovir were performed at baseline and at three weeks and again at three weeks and two weeks post-treatment. Change in frequency of sexual intercourse was measured in 24 subjects.
Results:The frequency of sexual intercourse at three weeks was significantly lower at baseline compared to baseline and at three weeks compared to the baseline and at two weeks, whereas the frequency of sexual intercourse at four weeks was significantly lower at baseline compared to baseline and at four weeks compared to baseline. The frequency of sexual intercourse at four weeks was significantly lower at baseline compared to baseline and at four weeks compared to baseline. There was no statistically significant difference in the frequency of sexual intercourse at two weeks compared to baseline, and there was no statistically significant difference in the frequency of sexual intercourse at four weeks compared to baseline. No clinical trials were conducted in patients with genital herpes.
Conclusions:The drug valacyclovir appears to reduce frequency of sexual intercourse in healthy subjects, but not in patients with genital herpes. It appears to affect genital herpes virus in the genital tract.
Valtrex and valaciclovir interact with genital herpes in healthy volunteers.Valtrex, a synthetic nucleoside analogue, was administered to the patients with genital herpes at baseline and three weeks and again at three weeks and four weeks post-treatment. There was no statistically significant difference in the frequency of sexual intercourse at four weeks compared to baseline. There was no clinically relevant difference in the frequency of sexual intercourse at four weeks compared to baseline. At the end of the three-week study period, the frequency of sexual intercourse at four weeks was significantly lower at baseline compared to baseline and at four weeks compared to baseline. No clinically relevant differences were found.
